Family Farmstead Dairy Recalls Cheddar Cheese for E. coli Risk
Class I Recall — Most Serious
This is a Class I recall — the most serious type. Products covered by this recall may cause serious health consequences or death.
Family Farmstead Dairy, based in Worcester, NY, has issued a recall for its Raw Mild Cheddar Cheese due to potential contamination with E. coli O26:H11 and O45:H2. This recall is being conducted with the knowledge of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Affected Products:
- Product: Family Farmstead Dairy Raw Mild Cheddar Cheese
- Lot Code: 7/22/27
- Best By Date: 7/22/27
The cheese was distributed to grocery stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, Maryland, Virginia, and Massachusetts. It may have also reached other states through downstream distributors.
Reason for Recall:
The recall was initiated after a sample in Maryland tested positive for two strains of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli. While no illnesses have been reported, E. coli can cause serious health issues, including a diarrheal illness with bloody stools and, in severe cases, Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), which can lead to kidney failure.

Consumers who have purchased the affected cheese should not consume it. They are advised to discard the product or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
