About FreshRecall
Making food recall information accessible for everyone.
What is FreshRecall?
FreshRecall is a free public service that makes FDA and USDA food recall information accessible and easy to understand. Every year, hundreds of food products are recalled in the United States due to safety concerns ranging from undeclared allergens to bacterial contamination. These recalls are critical to public health, but the official announcements can be difficult to find and hard to parse.
We believe everyone deserves clear, timely information about the safety of the food they buy and consume. FreshRecall bridges the gap between complex government announcements and the everyday consumer who simply wants to know: is this product safe?
How It Works
Monitor
We continuously monitor FDA and USDA recall announcements and safety alerts as they are published.
Simplify
We process and rewrite recall information in plain, easy-to-understand language for everyone.
Organize
We organize recalls by state, category, hazard type, and classification so you can quickly find what matters.
Our Data Sources
All recall information on FreshRecall is sourced from official U.S. government channels. We rely on three primary data sources to ensure accuracy and timeliness:
- FDA Safety Recalls — The official recall announcements published directly by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
- openFDA API — A publicly available API that provides structured access to FDA enforcement reports and recall data.
- USDA FSIS Recall API — The official recall data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, covering meat, poultry, and egg product recalls.
